With today’s modern lasers, the process of tattoo removal has become almost completely non-invasive, much more effective and more comfortable. Complete laser tattoo removal requires several treatment sessions, typically spaced at least six to nine weeks apart. The number of sessions and spacing between treatments depends on various parameters, including the area of the body treated and skin colour. Treating more frequently than six weeks increases the risk of adverse effects and does not necessarily increase the rate of fading. Laser works by producing short pulses of intense light that pass harmlessly through the top layers of the skin to be selectively absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This laser energy causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles that are then removed by the body's immune system. The ink is broken-down, absorbed and expelled by the body and the tattoo fades gradually over time. At each session, some but not all of the tattoo pigment particles are effectively shattered, and the body removes the smallest fragments over the course of several weeks. Remaining large particles of tattoo pigment are then targeted at subsequent treatment sessions, causing further lightening.
We use advanced cooling machines to help minimise discomfort. Pain during the treatment however is relative and will depend on the individual’s pain threshold. Scarred clients usually feel stronger pain, while other clients refer such pain to a flick of a hot rubber band. Usually the procedure is over within minutes, sometimes seconds. You may return to work immediately. There is no down time for this procedure.
You may also purchase a light topical anesthetic to reduce the pain during the treatment. This can be purchased over the counter at most chemists (3gm approx. $10). This can be applied to the area 1hr prior to your visit. Please contact your GP for advise on its use and ensure you do not have any allergies to its active ingredients. Please notify us if you have chosen to use numbing cream as this will need to be removed prior to the laser removal treatment.
Not all clients are ideal candidates for laser tattoo removal. It’s important to recognise these relative contraindications and absolute contraindications to laser tattoo removal.
